I volunteered to share a bit about my part of America – The Interior of Alaska. We live in the middle of the largest state in the Union and I love it here. I hope that you are all able to visit one day….

We moved here from sunny California at the height of the summer season. In the summer, the sun shines almost 24 hours a day, and the weather often is close to 80 degrees. We share our neighborhood with moose that wander in and out of our yards. While moose are quiet animals, they will charge if they feel threatened and never do you want to find yourself between a momma moose and her calf!!

Our fall season is very short…The darkness of evening returns in August and usually the leaves start changing color in early September – they have dropped from the trees by the end of September. We go through a few weeks of “barren” time when everyone is waiting impatiently for the first snowfall.

The first snows are usually very gentle. The sun shines bright on our wee hill but it’s warmth slowly disappears. By December 21, the shortest day of the year, we can have temperatures as low as -30 F and the sun shines only 3 precious hours from 11:30am to 2:30pm. By the time the kids leave school at 3pm, it is completely dark. These are the days that we look forward to spring!
